Common Sense Pediatrics for Parents represents my thirty years of experience in Pediatrics and was written for the lay person who is either having a child or who has young children and is looking for a guide on what to expect from birth to adolescence. It is filled with information about what to expect in the hospital and how to approach the most common situations that occur in childhood. I have been looking for a good, simple book to recommend to parents to guide them through this and have not found one I could recommend, so hopefully Common Sense Pediatrics for Parents will be it. This is not to be a substitute for your own physician and not everyone will agree with everything but it does dispel many of the myths, and wives tales out there. I went home many nights hoarse from explaining and instructing to my patients and Common Sense Pediatrics for Parents is just a written expression of what I said. I hope it helps those out there that want to instruct themselves on common Pediatric conditions and at least my approach to dealing with them.

I had the pleasure of Dr. O'Hern being my son's doctor for 20 years. His common sense approach to medicine was just what was needed as a new parent and beyond. He talked to you, not at or down to you. No concern was ever too small. This all comes across in his book. Dan had amassed a career's worth of good advice for parents. This is a great reference for parents and covers a wide array of topics. A superb handbook!
while i bought this book and it's absolutely fantastic, i've experienced Dr. O'Hern's work first hand as my daughter was a patient of his. his advice was priceless and on the money and can't thank him enough for his wisdom. i wish he hadn't retired because my daughter is still so young, but this book means i can keep his advice with me at all times when needed.
This book really helped me understand several issues/questions about raising children. The book has individual chapters on several topics for infants up to teenage years - rashes, timeouts, vaccines, feeding, behavioral issues. It provides a simple narrative that I'll be able to refer back to as certain questions come up. I always get intimidated by these topics and feel much more comfortable about them after reading this book. It's a quick read and a MUST for new parents.
The author has plead guilty to possession and distribution of child pornography. I don't see why you would buy a book about pediatrics from someone who willingly bought and shared material of children as young as 5 being sexually abused, even if they are a pediatrician themselves.
